Christmas Boxes for the Homeless

The festive season is ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ but for some it can be very tough!

This year with the homeless crisis rising in Ireland I couldn’t help but think of them coming into the Christmas period. I wanted to do something but couldn’t think of what until a friend told me about this appeal; A Christmas Box for the Homeless. They are looking for gift wrapped boxes to be filled with treats, items of clothing, sanitary products, books, and games for men, women, children and even dogs!

DSCN1445

I decided to fill two Christmas bags (as I couldn’t find boxes big enough) with items for a man and a woman. I found nice thick thermal gloves, thermal flasks, sanitary products, chocolate, Sudoku and crossword books, never worn shoes and coat. As I had a budget I tried to think of each person and what I could do to put a smile on their faces. The site advises what/ not to put into the bags but here is a list you can follow!

Toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash
Shower gel,soap
Face cloth
Brush,comb
Babywipes, face wipes
Deodorant
Moisturiser
Women’s sanitary products

Warm winter wear;
Underwear (New!)
Warm Gloves, Warm Hat
Scarf
Socks (New!)

Sleeping bags

Chocolate, sweets, crisps, cereal bars, pack of cards, a game, cigarettes, a puzzle or book! Or get creative.

What not to put in-
Glass bottle liquids, alcohol, out of date foods by Christmas, breakables or sharp items.

You can print the pages off the site and attach them to your boxes, it is really very simple! The last day for the boxes is December 4th but they realistically need them by the end of November.

The drop point for Killarney is the Riverside Hotel, Flesk Road. The site has every possible answer to your questions and are very nice so contact them if you need too!

Please do try to make up some boxes this season, hopefully this will put a smile on someone’s face come Christmas time 🙂

Knitting and Stitching Show, RDS, Dublin

Knitting and stitching? Yes, at heart I am 82 years old and this year really did not  disappoint! Stalls are far as you could see laden with card and scrapbooking materials, books, wool, art, kits and my favourite- fabric!! Thousands of yards of fabric in every colour, texture and print! The cheeky chappies at Fabric Time, www.fabrictime.co.uk had an amazing selection but were so busy you couldn’t get a good photo!

image

Quilting is one of my things to do! I’m not very good at cutting straight lines so they end up quite wonky but made with love!!
I ended up buying way to many fat quarters, although I could’ve done with loads more..

The art that was exhibited was amazing, the things people can do with textiles is amazing!

These were by far the most amazing pieces of art I have seen in a very long time!!
‘Kate’s Plaice, the Stitchmongers’, Katie Jenkins (@KnittedArt on Twitter) are based in Brighton AND are so lovely!!
Who doesn’t need a sequined sardine or jellyfish on their wall?!

image

I’m biased in my opinion here but Create with Kate, www.createwithkate.com, stand was full of the best things and I could’ve spent my tonsils. Instead I was very good and left with an album and some fabric! I will post more pictures of the materials when the  projects are finished!!

At the end of the day I met this wonderful lady who was completely unaware how cool she actually is! She told me she bought her jumper in Penneys for €20 because it felt nice!! She didn’t know why people commented on it!

I would throughly recommend going if you are in anyway crafty and if you like what you see here check out the website for more amazing crafts! www.knittingandstitchingshow.com/dublin

Special mention goes to Flynns of Castlemaine who made the journey so easy! Check out their Facebook page for any bus/coach hire you may need! https://goo.gl/Ei1kkg

Lipstick Love

Last Wednesday I cleaned out my handbag, actually I was forced to clean it as I had lost my drivers license. This is a rare opportunity to get rid of the junk, receipts, tickets, sweet wrappers, coins.. and discover strange things like a torch, an old bulb and some cable ties. (Why?)

As I sorted through the debris I seemed to be gathering quite the collection of favourite lipsticks! Ones I have rebought countless times and new ones I’m not so keen on which were obviously discarded into the abisss never to see the light of day again!

I love lipstick; it can instantly lift your mood or outfit or instantly ruin a white shirt! If I’m not at work I’m wearing it. You can always tell what I’ve been drinking out of because it’s covered in dark berry smudges!

I decided to showcase the well used and well loved lipsticks in my life-

Catrice- Luminous Lips Wood Rose Propose
Rimmel- Starry Eyed
New Look- Pure Colour Plum
Rimmel- Kate Moss Matte 107
Seventeen- Stay Pout Rule Breaker
Also found was Mac- Ruby Woo but was too crushed and gross to picture!

Can you guess the theme? Unless it’s berry or red I cannot wear it. I tried a nude lip but ended up looking like Edward Scissorhands..

Although I have plenty I always want more and taunting me through every social medium known was a lady called Charlotte Tilbury. And this beautiful creation is Love Liberty.

I have wanted this lipstick since I saw it used in a tutorial about a year ago! Although stocked in Brown Thomas, it would mean a trip to Dublin to buy it! (Come on Cork store, sort it out please!) I’m aware there is an online service but it is just not the same!
I love matte, creamy textures that aren’t going to dry out my lips and this is perfect! Not only is the packaging completely beautiful, it is addictive and now I need the whole collection.

So Santa, if you are reading..

Friday 13th

On a day which is regarded as unlucky, I feel it has always been lucky for me! I love the suspicions, black cats crossing your path and the fact tattoos around the world are celebrated!!

Friday 13th as far as I can remember has been a tradition among the artists and collectors of the world- all designed around the number 13. When one of the local studios- Ancient Ritual Tattoos https://goo.gl/hmzbeL advertised the flash sale we had to go! I have a few already but wanted to add to the collection.

Not just for me though.. my brother, sister, boyfriend and bestie also got tagged! Sorry Moms.

I went home that evening and turned on the tv and what I saw was heartbreaking. Paris had been targeted and over 100 people already killed. Twitter was going crazy. People I knew in Paris were letting us know they were safe but still in danger. Hearing about an attack close to home really makes you sit up and listen- hearing daily news about attacks in Syria, Lebanon, nuclear this, air strike that.. it becomes white noise. This shocked me to the core.

I felt as though my new tattoo actually meant something other than just a random act today, a bird for freedom maybe? I certainly won’t forget that day.
As I write this there has been another attack in Kenya.. Pray for Earth, not just Paris. We are all human! 🌎🌏🌍

Safe travels everyone,

Early dog walk..

An early, dark, wet and very muddy stroll was had this morning! Ross Castle was empty and looking very moody so I used the opportunity to take some photos.

image

I think I will treat myself to a new DSLR soon, I used my Samsung galaxy 5s to take these although the new iPhone 6s camera is quite nice! Same megapixal camera as this but iSight just makes everything look so much better!!

The park was empty the so madras were delighted to have the place to themselves, finding things to sniff and roll around in… They went straight in the bath as soon as we got home!

The sun decided to come out as soon as we got back to the car- I am not sure if it will stay though!! Enjoy the day whatever you do!

Today we climbed..

image

My friend and I are on a quest to be more active. Well, she is, I have yet to fully commit to this idea..
Although today really changed my mind! I am so lazy when I want to be. I even  cycled the Ring of Kerry for Down Syndrome Ireland this summer.. (excuse the awful photo!)

IMG_20151104_165328

I used to walk, run, climb, swim, go to the gym but none of it helped! I hated the idea of being in a gym where people are watching me and my face getting more and more red and frustrated. I have such respect for these Fit fam ladies because you have the stamina and willpower that I was born without!!

I have noticed that with age (yes I am actually saying this) that I do not have the ability to eat whatever I like and do nothing about it- so I reached an empasse. Either eat what I want, buy bigger pants and be miserable OR do something about it.
I love to bake, cook and obviously eat.. probably too much! I’ve seen the benefits of dairy, gluten and sugar free but none of it appeals to me. So begins the experiment, can I maintain a lifestyle I am comfortable with? Let’s see.

We climbed Torc today, I would’ve laughed at someone saying we could have done it in under 2 hours. It was beautiful and I was so happy I did it. I have to stop putting restrictions on myself. It’s too easy to make excuses! So from now on I will say yes to more!
